Undergraduate Spanish Program |

The GRIIS Undergraduate Spanish Program
is organized and administered by the Granada Institute of
International Studies, under the auspices of the existing
academic agreement between the Granada Institute of International
Studies and the University
of Granada´s Centro de Lenguas Modernas. The program
is designed to foster personal and intellectual growth by
immersing students in the everyday life of modern Spain. The
program offers qualified undergraduate students the opportunity
to live and study for either a semester or the academic year
in one of Spain´s oldest and most historically significant
cities. The program also aims to enhance undergraduate students’
knowledge of Spanish so that they will acquire the proficiency
level needed to fulfill their language requirements.
Students who plan to take part in the GRIIS
Spanish program will have orientation sessions during the
first week of the program. Students attending courses in Granada
will enroll in up to 5 courses or a maximum of 16 credits
per semester, with the following distribution depending
upon their language level:

A)
LANGUAGE AND CULTURE PROGRAM (200-300-level courses) |
This program is intended for students
who have not completed 4 semesters of Spanish.
1)
GRIIS Seminar in “Issues
in Spanish Society”. This
seminar will be led by Dr. Amalia Pulgarín, the
Program Director, and will meet twice a week. (45 contact
hours).
2)
Speaking and writing skills,
administered by faculty of the Centro de Lenguas Modernas
of the University of Granada. (45 contact hours each).
3)
Notions of Spanish Grammar,
administered by faculty of the Centro de Lenguas Modernas
of the University of Granada. (45 contact hours each).
4)
One or two elective courses
chosen from the courses listed below offered by Centro
de Lenguas Modernas of the University of Granada. This
selection will be determined by the program Director
according to each student´s interests and needs.
However, students with Spanish Majors usually must take
a Literature course. All other students may choose freely.

B)
HISPANIC STUDIES PROGRAM (300-400-level courses) |
This program is intended for students
who have completed 4 semesters of Spanish or have been
placed in the Hispanic Studies Program after taking
the UGR placement test..
1)
GRIIS Seminar in “Issues in Spanish Society”
or GRIIS Internship. The seminar
will be led by Dr. Amalia Pulgarín, the Program
Director, and will meet twice a week. (45 contact hours).
The Internship will be offered only during the Spring
Semester to qualified students who choose the Academic
Year Program.
2) Speaking and writing
skills (advanced), administered
by faculty of the Centro de Lenguas Modernas of the
University of Granada. (45 contact hours each).
3) Spanish Grammar
(advanced/superior), administered
by faculty of the Centro de Lenguas Modernas of the
University of Granada. (45 contact hours each).
4) One or two elective
courses chosen from the list below
offered by Centro de Lenguas Modernas of the University
of Granada. This selection will be determined by the
program Director according to each student´s interests
and needs. However, students with a Major in Spanish
usually must take a Literature course. All other students

1.- SEMINAR IN “ISSUES
IN SPANISH SOCIETY”
This portion of the GRIIS program comprises both oral and
written discussion of issues that are particular to Spanish
Language, Society and Culture. The program director teaches
these bi-weekly sessions and directly supervises the progress
of each student. The seminar is aimed at polishing oral and
written expression on an individual basis, which will be achieved
through student analysis of specific readings related to various
fields of knowledge, as well as through the discussion and
joint analysis of world events. Additionally, this time will
be used for review and as a period for synthesizing the content
from any other courses each student may be taking. Specific
seminar content will be determined jointly by the students
and the Program Director.
2.- SPANISH LANGUAGE, LITERATURE
AND CULTURE COURSES
The Spanish Language and Culture courses are designed to increase
oral and written proficiency, with discussion and review of
the most relevant points of grammar. Readings include works
by Spanish authors dealing with contemporary issues which
provide topics for written assignments, oral presentations
and debates. These courses are taught by faculty of the University
of Granada´s Centro de Lenguas Modernas, in coordination
with the Program Director. Students will take a placement
test and will follow the language and culture courses that
best suit their needs. The syllabus of each course is available

3.- TUTORIAL CLASSES
In addition to the above, the program director will be available
to students for tutorial classes throughout the program. These
classes are aimed at polishing oral and written expression
on an individual basis, as well as reviewing the content of
the courses the student is taking.

EXTRACURRICULAR
ACTIVITIES |
|
|
The city of Granada is known as a University
City, due in large part to the student population at UGR.
The city itself also offers many activities that prove noteworthy
for students coming from abroad. The
Program has its own calendar of extracurricular activities.
These include day-trips to nearby places such as The Alpujarras
area or monument cities such as Córdoba and Seville.
A visit to Madrid is scheduled during the Fall Semester. Visits
to exhibits, lectures or movies are frequent.

EVALUATION,
GRADES, OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS FROM THE UNIVERSITY
OF GRANADA AND TRANSFER CREDITS |

|
Students participating in the program
will take the University of Granada examinations in order
to receive official University grades.Transcripts will be
issued by the University of Granada for all courses taken
and passed in order to obtain transfer credits. Students may
earn up to 16 credit hours per semester (4 credits per course).
Students will receive official grades and transcripts issued
by the University of Granada for all courses taken and passed.
GRIIS will forward these grades to the Registrar of your Home
Institution in order to obtain transfer credits.

HOUSING
AND TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS |
|
|
All students are housed in Spanish homes.
GRIIS makes the appropriate arrangements for these accommodations.
These arrangements provide students an opportunity to experience
Spanish family life and to use the language in the context
of everyday situations. The program cost covers housing plus
three meals a day. Travel expenses are not included in the
program´s cost. Students will make their own travel
arrangements.
Some U.S. Citizens and Permanent
Residents may qualify for financial aid. For detailed information,
please contact your Financial Aid office.
