PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The SIPTI program is organized under the auspices of the agreement signed between the Granada Institute of International Studies (GRIIS) and the Universidad de Granada. The Summer Intensive Preparation for Translation and Interpretation (SIPTI) courses are specially designed to provide intensive language instruction at a highly advanced level primarily to prepare students for the rigors of graduate study at the Graduate School of Translation and Interpretation (GSTI) at the Monterey Institute or other T&I Schools worldwide. The program is also ideal for language professionals and language instructors who want to consolidate their second or third language skills at an intense, advanced level. The course is intended to fill the gap between traditional advanced language programs and language enhancement for the translation and interpretation professions. To this end, classroom activities focus on the kinds of strategies and competencies that will be required in GSTI (e.g., text analysis, oral and written summarizing and paraphrasing, reading and listening comprehension, vocabulary and glossary development, public speaking, and accent reduction). Structural accuracy will be refined through grammar review, and sociolinguistic competence will be targeted through exercises in idiomatic language and cultural enhancement.

These objectives will be achieved primarily through content-based instruction in subject areas pertinent to the fields of translation and interpretation: politics & law, economics & business, and science & technology. Cultural topics of history, geography, politics, sports, and social trends will also be covered to provide students a frame of reference for semantic and text analysis.

THE UNIVERSITY OF GRANADA

The University of Granada was founded in 1531 by Emperor Charles V. Granada was established as a university city, open to all peoples, cultures, creeds and ideologies.
