Graduate Spanish Program |

The GRIIS Graduate Spanish Program is organized
and administered by the Granada Institute of International
Studies, under the auspices of the existing academic agreement
between the Granada Institute of International Studies and
the University
of Granada´s Centro de Lenguas Modernas. The program
is designed to foster personal and intellectual growth by
immersing students in the everyday life of modern Spain. The
program offers qualified undergraduate students the opportunity
to live and study for either a semester or the academic year
in one of Spain´s oldest and most historically significant
cities.
The program is aimed to highly motivated
students expecting academic excellence in a demanding program
that provides personal attention and support to achieve their
goals. The program offers a unique combination of classes
at the University of Granada with classes specifically designed
for GRIIS students plus tutorial classes. Orientation sessions
will take place during the first week of the program. Students
attending courses in Granada will enroll in up to
5 courses per semester at the 300-400-500 level with
the following distribution:
1) GRIIS
Seminar in “Cultural Identities”.
The seminar will be led by Dr. Amalia Pulgarín, the
Program Director, and will meet twice a week. (60 contact
hours).
2) Speaking
and writing skills (superior), administered
by faculty of the Centro de Lenguas Modernas of the University
of Granada. (45 contact hours).
3)
Up to three elective courses chosen from the
list below offered by Centro de Lenguas Modernas of the University
of Granada. This selection will be determined by the program
Director and her/ his advisor according to each student´s
interests and needs (40 contact hours each). In addition to
this list, one of the elective courses taken by students may
be in another language and it will be chosen from those taught
at Centro de Lenguas Modernas (i.e. French, German, Italian,
Arabic…).

COURSE

1.- SEMINAR IN “CULTURAL
IDENTITIES”
This portion of the GRIIS program comprises has a multidisciplinary
profile. It focuses on
three areas of study: socio-linguistics; Literature and Arts.
Readings include journalistic texts, essays and works of fiction
aiming to provoke a personal reflection about current events
as well as a re-definition of concepts such as borders, canon
and identity. We will make extensive use of the rich cultural
and artistic resources of Granada. The program director teaches
these bi-weekly sessions and directly supervises the progress
of each student. The seminar will also provide the opportunity
to polish oral and written expression on an individual basis,
achieved through student analysis of specific readings related
to the various fields of knowledge detailed above. There will
also be discussions and joint analysis of topics as well as
oral presentations. Specific seminar content will be determined
jointly by the students and the Program Director.
2.- SPANISH LANGUAGE, LITERATURE
AND CULTURE COURSES
The Spanish Language and Culture courses (the speaking and
writing skills course plus the three elective courses) are
designed to increase oral and written proficiency, with discussion
and review of the most relevant points of grammar. Readings
include works by Spanish authors dealing with contemporary
issues which provide topics for written assignments, oral
presentations and debates. These courses are taught by faculty
of the University of Granada´s Centro de Lenguas Modernas,
in coordination with the Program Director. Students will take
a placement test and will follow the language and culture
courses that best suit their needs. The syllabus of each course

3.- TUTORIAL CLASSES.
In addition to the above, the program director will be available
to students for tutorial classes throughout the program. These
classes are aimed at polishing oral and written expression
on an individual basis, as well as reviewing the content of
the courses the student is taking.

EXTRACURRICULAR
ACTIVITIES |
|
|
The city of Granada is known as a University
City, due in large part to the student population at UGR.
The city itself also offers many activities that prove noteworthy
for students coming from abroad. The
Program has its own calendar of extracurricular activities.
These include day-trips to nearby places such as The Alpujarras
area or monument cities such as Córdoba and Seville.
A visit to Madrid is scheduled during the Fall Semester. Visits
to exhibits, lectures or movies are frequent.

EVALUATION,
GRADES, OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS FROM THE UNIVERSITY
OF GRANADA AND TRANSFER CREDITS |
|
|
Students participating in the program
will take the University of Granada examinations in order
to receive official University grades.Transcripts will be
issued by the University of Granada for all courses taken
and passed in order to obtain transfer credits. Students
may earn up to 16 credit hours per semester (4 credits
per course).

HOUSING
AND TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS |
|
|
Students will freely choose to live either
with Spanish families, in University residencies, or in individual
or shared apartments. GRIIS is not responsible for housing
arrangements and costs, which will vary depending on the student's
choice. GRIIS will assist students in securing a proper accomodation.
Included in the total cost of the program is a housing fee
of 3,800 € (academic year) or 1,900 € (semester).
This fee will be fully reimbursed on a bi-monthly basis to
the student who can freely use this money towards covering
her/his housing costs. The fee is required for legal reasons
in order to obtain a student's visa. Travel expenses are not
included in the program’s cost. Students will make their
own travel arrangements.The program will provide documents
that are needed in order to obtain a student's visa from the
Spanish Consulate
The program provides to its students,
free of charge, with health insurance. Health care is provided
by private hospitals and doctors. Please inquire for a detailed
description of coverage.
Some U.S. Citizens and Permanent
Residents may qualify for financial aid. For detailed information,
please contact your Financial Aid office.
